Richmond Jets Officials

The referee-in-chief position for Richmond Jets MHA is being shared by three individuals:

  • Dave Bolton – RIC-Governance, Rules, Discipline
  • Ben Kiang – RIC-Referee Training & Development
  • Don Mathewson – RIC-Communication and Administration

Don Mathewson is the primary contact for all officiating-related questions from the refs themselves, coaches, managers, parents, and outsiders.

All Returning Officials

Please remember that you need to attend an update clinic every season, before Christmas. The update clinics typically appear on the BC Hockey Clinics page in mid-August.  If you are 2003-born or older, you need to attend a returning level 2 clinic. If you are 2004-born or younger, you need to attend a returning level 1.

New Hockey Officials

For 2007-born or older players, the process of becoming a hockey official will begin in August 2019, when RJMHA will host an information night (date and time TBA). The purpose of the meeting is to provide information about the process of becoming an official and answer any relevant questions from members.

A few days after this meeting, a link will be posted on our website to secure a spot as a new RJMHA official. The link will be available at a time and date (currently TBA) that will be specified at the information meeting and also on our website. The link will take you to a Google form which, when filled out, will be placed in a queue. Only the first 35 forms will be accepted into the clinic, since we only have the capacity for 35 new officials. This is the number that we feel we are able to effectively manage throughout the season.

If you are successful at being placed on the list, you will receive a confirmation email. You will then register for the HU-Online Officiating 1/2 referee course offered by Hockey Canada. This costs about $20 and will take a few days to finish, since there are a number of videos for aspiring officials to watch.

Once the online course has been completed, the 35 prospective officials will register for a new Level 1 Officiating Course (or Level 2, if 16 years or older) at a cost of about $100. The registration link for this course will be emailed only to these 35 families, usually in mid-September for an end-of-September course (exact dates TBA). We anticipate that this course will be offered at the RIC as in the past, but this is subject to approval by BC Hockey.

If you are not one of the first 35 players on the list, then you will be able to try again next year. Please note that although you may be able to take a Level 1 course in a neighbouring MHA, you will still be very unlikely to receive game assignments from RJMHA, as our priority will be the 35 officials on our list. Although we are sure everyone not on the list will be disappointed, we must restrict our enrolment in the program to ensure its viability.​
